Dozens of members were called to a home in the 1700 block of Sykesville Road south of Westminster shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 21, where they were met by smoke showing and a fire in the attic of a two-story residence, officials say.

For hours, they battled sub-zero temperatures, snow, and ice, before eventually declaring the fire under control at around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday night.

The family was able to escape the home unharmed, though one firefighter was taken to Carroll Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was later released, a spokesperson for the Westminster Fire Department said.

Firefighters from Westminster, Manchester, Reese, New Windsor, Gamber, Winfield, and Pleasant Valley all responded, according to officials, as well as Maryland State Police and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation. The American Red Cross is assisting the family, which will be temporarily displaced.
